Mastering Manufacturing: The Ultimate Guide to Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE) – Part 2.

Reading time: 4 min. |
In the first part of this series, we introduced the concept of Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE), explaining its components, calculation methods, and the benefits it offers to manufacturing operations. Now, we'll delve into the practical side of things: how to visualize and monitor OEE using a Peakboard dashboard.

The Importance of OEE Dashboards

An OEE dashboard is a powerful tool for real-time monitoring and analysis of production efficiency. By leveraging the visual and interactive capabilities of Peakboard, manufacturers can gain immediate insights into their production processes, identify bottlenecks, and make data-driven decisions to enhance operational performance.

Key Components of an OEE Dashboard

A well-designed OEE dashboard should display the following key components:

  1. Availability: Shows the percentage of time that the equipment is available for production.
  2. Performance: Indicates the speed at which the equipment operates compared to its maximum potential.
  3. Quality: Reflects the percentage of good units produced out of the total units started.
  4. Overall OEE: Combines the three factors (Availability, Performance, and Quality) to provide a comprehensive efficiency metric.

Example of an OEE Dashboard with Peakboard

Let’s walk through an example of an OEE dashboard created using Peakboard. The dashboard is designed to provide a clear and comprehensive view of the production line’s performance.

  1. Overview and Time Display
At the top of the dashboard, we have the title “Production Line 1” along with the current time and date, ensuring that the displayed data is up-to-date.
  2. Availability
The Availability section displays a circular gauge showing the current availability percentage (80.58%). This gauge provides a quick visual indication of how often the equipment is available for production within the scheduled time.
  3. Performance
The Performance section includes a bar chart showing the production speed relative to the target and average speeds. With the target set at 23 units and an average of 33.83 units, the performance percentage is calculated at 67.99%. This section helps identify whether the equipment is operating at its optimal speed.
  4. Quality
In the Quality section, another circular gauge represents the quality percentage (76.98%), indicating the proportion of good units produced. This metric is crucial for maintaining high production standards and reducing waste.
  5. Overall OEE
The OEE section combines the Availability, Performance, and Quality metrics into a single, comprehensive efficiency score (42.17). This overall score provides a snapshot of the production line’s effectiveness and helps identify areas for improvement.
  6. Timeline and Live Updates
At the bottom, a timeline displays the progression of the production process, highlighting any downtime or delays. Live updates ensure that the dashboard reflects the most current data, enabling real-time decision-making.

Benefits of Using Peakboard for OEE Monitoring

  • Real-Time Data: Peakboard dashboards provide live data updates, allowing for immediate response to production issues.
  • Visual Clarity: The use of visual elements like gauges and charts makes it easy to understand complex data at a glance.
  • Customization: Peakboard allows for tailored dashboards that can be customized to fit specific production needs and metrics.
  • Improved Decision-Making: With all critical OEE data in one place, managers can make informed decisions to enhance efficiency and productivity.

Conclusion

Implementing an OEE dashboard with Peakboard transforms raw data into actionable insights, empowering manufacturers to optimize their production processes. By monitoring Availability, Performance, and Quality in real-time, organizations can address inefficiencies, improve productivity, and achieve significant cost savings. In this two-part series, we have covered the fundamentals of OEE and demonstrated how to utilize a Peakboard dashboard for effective OEE monitoring. By adopting these practices, manufacturers can unlock the full potential of their production operations and maintain a competitive edge in the industry.
